The third (or was it second?) grade teacher picked up the white chalk and wrote on the green slate panels in big, cursive letters three names. She said, "Okay, now come up here and write your names like I have them on the board." A young boy went up to the name on the left. A young girl went to the name on the right. And nobody went to the name in the center. The teacher looked at me and said, "Bo, come on up here and write your name."
In a quiet, uncomfortable voice, I replied, "But, my name isn't up there."

Everybody calls me "Bo." It's my name. But,for those who do not know, my full name is Vernon Alfred McGuffee II. Usually, when I tell this to people, the first thing they ask is “Okay, but how do you get ‘Bo’ out of that?” Perhaps it’s time to share the story.
Back when I was less than a year old, my family lived in Paxton, IL (down by Champaign-Urbana). Since Paxton was a small town, people tended to leave everything unlocked. Kids wandered the neighborhood, and the local parents just took any of them who wandered into their yards under their wings.
